9/27/17 - We now have several weekends of small game and archery hunting under our belt as well as the opening weekend of waterfowl. From the reports we have gathered hunting success has been fair, although the weather and habitat conditions have played a bigger part in hunter success. Lots of leaf cover still on trees has limited grouse hunter's success but there are good numbers of birds around so things should improve soon. Goose hunters did well during the early season overall and numbers have improved yet again with some molt migrators moving into the area, which was seen in hunter bags over duck opener. Few mallards in the area but LOTS of wood ducks and some bluewing teal to help provide some action. Rice beds near the Mississippi were fairly productive over the weekend as well as some of the backwoods beaver dams. Archery deer harvest have been down but hunters are seeing plenty of deer, just waiting for the right one.
Fishing reports have been few and far between with the recent weather but the reports we are getting are hinting at an improvement coming. Water temps are still hovering in the low to mid 60's, and with the 10-day forecast calling for highs in the 50's-60's and lows in the 40's things should get good really quick. Crappies are just starting to trickle into the deeper winter holes, as are walleyes. The good fall bite is less than a week away from the start!
Good luck to all of our outdoorsmen and be safe out there!
